Who Is My Neighbour?
Luke 10: 25-37
Read the story of the parable on this OHP/Handout
(OHP 1) , and then discuss the following questions. (The version
of the bible chosen for is "The Message"'. This has been chosen
because it's easy to understand - you may prefer to read the story
from class bibles).
Questions to accompany
OHP/Handout (OHP 2)
A parable is a story with a point (Jesus told stories to
illustrate how God loves people and how people should love each
other).
To show us that we should be kind to everyone, no matter who
they are, whether we know them or not, or whether we like them or
not.
-
Who acted
like a good neighbour in this story? Why?
The Samaritan, because he showed compassion.
About the story ...
-
The priest
and the Levite would be expected to help because he was "one
of their own', but they did nothing.
-
Samaritans and
Jews were sworn enemies. This makes the Samaritan's actions all
the more important, as he would have grown up in a place where
Samaritans and Jews were not friends, and certainly didn't help
each other.
-
The man who asked
Jesus the question wanted to know who he "had to be nice to" to
get into heaven. He only wanted to be nice to his "neighbours".
Jesus answered the question by turning the whole thing on its
head - the man should be the one who is the
neighbour - and be the neighbour to everybody. The same
applies to us - we can't just be nice to people we like, but
should think of others.
Act It Out!
Who can you be nice to today? Assign each child as a "guardian
angel' to another child for the day: as a guardian angel, they have
to do lots of nice surprises for their classmate all day, and take
care of them if they need extra care that day!
