Just did something
Fundraising events for Game of 2 Halves
Churches, students, young people and
sportspeople have all been involved in raising money for Game of 2
Halves - here are some of their stories.
Jam Sandwich youth group
"Please find enclosed a cheque for 287.50. The money was
raised by Jam Sandwich - a youth group in Tadley for children of
school age which we run. Two of the children had such a
fantastic time at the Brecon Sports Plus Camp that they wanted to
support the GO2H project. We were planning an auction of
sporting events (tickets) when the local cinema offered a
pre-release viewing of the film Goal - 180 seats to use as we wanted
and hence the money raised so far. The auction is planned for
November 12 and we will be in touch once it has happened."

Sponsored Triathlon
"I
completed the triathlon in a personal best time of 1 Hour 54
Minutes, an overall position of 274 out of 500 competitors. The 4Km
Row (which felt like a warm up, compared to the other events) took
17:50 minutes then the 25Km Cycle (I enjoyed this one, although
included a number of very steep hills, the country side scenery was
fantastic) took 57:14 minutes, finally the 7.5Km Run (by this time
my legs felt like jelly and I only managed to complete it by singing
old hymns!) took 39:36 minutes. So far I have raised £30.00, with
more pledges to be completed."

Bleep test 2004
Sixth former Kaz Hannah reports on the highlight of 2004’s Sports
Plus camps
"The highlight for so many people at every Sports Plus Camp this
year – surprisingly - turned out to be the dreaded bleep test. It
was an amazing sight to behold – up to 150 people at one time
setting off on the multi-stage fitness test trying to keep up with
the ever quickening bleep. Young people were cheered on by their
leaders, coaches were cheered on by the young people, nurses were
cheered on by the technical team.
It was great to see the enthusiasm, the commitment to doing the best
you could do as an individual, the encouragement, and not least
knowing that young and old had raised over £4,000 for the Game of 2
Halves project. People got sponsored for doing the run, and some
even got sponsored a set amount according to the level they
achieved. The run ended with the largest prayer huddle Sports Plus
has ever seen. One coach summed it up: “what an experience - a real
taste of heaven!”

Sports Quiz
"Recently I was discussing how we could use our
sports facilities to reach people with the gospel of Jesus Christ.
The result – a sports quiz at my rugby club in June.
We had three
aims; to have fun, to raise funds for GO2H, and for the gospel to be
presented simply and clearly. We relied upon personal invitations
and there was a gospel talk during the interval, which was well
received. It was a fabulous venture, and we would encourage others
to have a go."

Sponsored walk
"Last year I was at the Christians in Sport camp
at Repton and one of the evenings there was a presentation on Game
of 2 Halves. I was so impressed with what you have done in the
poorer countries I thought I could help, so I did. ‘My youth club,
at North Leeds Vineyard, and I got the whole church involved in a
sponsored walk of 5 miles. We raised just under £240. I hope you use
the money wisely and I am glad that it will help some-one
somewhere."

Sports college raises
money for kids in Kenya
GO2H has captured the imagination of a specialist sports college
in Birmingham. When asked if they would raise enough money for sports
equipment to be taken out to Kenya this Easter, the staff and pupils of
Bishop Challoner Catholic School willingly agreed to take up the challenge.
Their new house system meant that each house was encouraged to raise the
most money for the Charity Shield.
So, for over a week, each lunchtime students completed the ‘Global
Challenge’ assault course set up in the gym. It was a sports skills course,
involving football dribble, Gaelic football skills, basketball shoot, a judo
throw, vaulting over a box, under beams, over hurdles and a final
charge
through tackle bags manned by members of the school’s own rugby academy.
Each competitor was timed to find the fastest challenger but, most
important, they were also sponsored to help GO2H. The gym was packed with
spectators and a running commentary was provided by students and staff.
Churches raise money for GO2H
The truth is we can all do something with our sport to impact the
communities we support through GO2H. It just takes some creative thinking
and then some action! Churches are getting stuck in too. As Steve Ashton
writes, his church in Bedford got soaked playing for GO2H. “Storm after
storm dumped its load on Bedford. As we got out of our cars at Bedford Park,
yet another deluge hit. Neither was there any sign of let-up. What is
surprising is that any kids turned up at all, but they did. Not many, but
those who did had a great time.
Needless to say, so did the wrinklies! Football, rounders, volleyball,
circuiting the park (the energetic ran – others were more sedate) and
finally the boys v girls ‘create a shanty house in ten minutes’, to be
tested with - you guessed it – more water! Though there were only a few of
us, we were blessed with a lot of sunshine after about ¾ of an hour, a lot
of fun and a donation of £159 for GO2H. Without the rain we might have
doubled that. It’s that easy, I’d recommend it to anyone. As GO2H suggests -
JUST DO SOMETHING!”
We are thankful to all those who have raised
money for GO2H |
