Isaiah 53v12-54v1
Liverpool Football Club played their
first football match in the late 19th century. They would never have
imagined at that first game that they would one day have 40,000
supporters in a stadium for a European Champions League Final!
In Isaiah 53:12 - 54:1 the prophet tells of a day to come when God would
send his ‘Servant’ to :
‘pour out his life unto death, and was numbered with the
transgressors. For he bore the sins of many and made intercession for
the transgressors’. Sing, O barren woman, you who never bore a child;
burst into song, shout for joy, you who were never in labour; because
more are the children of the desolate woman than of here who has a
husband, says the Lord’.
We now know that Isaiah was talking about Jesus Christ.
Jesus was the one who was ‘numbered with the transgressors’ and ‘bore
the sins of many’.
He would die in your place and mine so that our sins would be forgiven
before a holy and loving God. And note that Isaiah goes on to teach what
the impact of this action on the world would be.
The people of Jesus would multiply to a great number, the ‘barren woman’
should ‘burst into song; shout for joy, because more are the children of
the desolate woman than of her who has a husband’.
Isaiah wrote at a time when God’s people Israel were barren and
unfruitful. Jesus’ death initiated a new era. God’s people, the church,
would grow and grow and impact the whole world.

child of Jesus Christ, who died for your sins and lives in you.
Once Jesus had twelve disciples, now he has millions of us all over the
world.
