PRESS RELEASE: Lord Mawhinney appointed as President of Christians in Sport

Christians in Sport today announced the appointment of former Chairman of The Football League and politician, Lord Mawhinney, as the charity’s first President with immediate effect.

Lord Mawhinney commented,

‘I have enjoyed and benefitted from working with Christians in Sport, under the umbrella of More Than Gold, for the past five years and am excited at the prospect of a closer relationship. I look forward to helping the charity develop its strategy, enhance and expand its activities and extol the good news of Jesus Christ.’

‘We are delighted Lord Mawhinney has accepted the role of President here at Christians in Sport. Lord Mawhinney’s in-depth understanding of the inner workings of sport makes him ideal for this role as Christians in Sport looks to serve the 15.5 million people that play sport in this country.’

Appointed Chairman of The Football League in 2003, Lord Mawhinney oversaw the restructure and rebranding of the league structure. His most notable political positions include Secretary of State for Transport, Minister of State at the Department of Health, Chairman of the Conservative Party and Shadow Home Secretary. In 2005, he stepped down from the House of Commons and took up his seat at the House of Lords.
