Robbing God

You people are robbing me, your God   Malachi 3:8

The startling accusation that the people are robbing God, refers to the failure to tithe. Tithing was a duty rather than an option for God’s people. They had to give a tenth of everything to God as a recognition that God was the source of all that they had. It was a kind of ecclesiastical income tax payable to the priests and Levites. The people in Malachi’s day had apparently ceased to pay their tithes.

The New Testament has much to say about money. Jesus told his followers that they could not serve God and money, the rich young ruler was told to sell everything and there are several warnings about the dangers of loving money.

As Christians we are no longer under the obligation to tithe but are required to be
worthy stewards of our possessions. Everything we have belongs to God. Our relationship with God may start in the head and end in the heart but it has to go via the pocket!

The basis of our relationship with God is a daily acceptance of his grace and forgiveness. We need constantly to confess our sins and return to God. That must apply to our money as much as any other aspect of our lives.
