Who’s the boss?
‘Then he said to his disciples, "The harvest is plentiful but the
workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out
workers into his harvest field.’
Matthew 9:37-38
Manchester United remain the team to beat to become champions of
England. They are led by the longest serving manager in English
football. Alex Ferguson has been in charge at United for 22 seasons.
Ferguson is the boss. He has proved that he knows exactly how to build a
team of champions and has done it time after time. The players who play
for him trust him completely when it comes to getting his signings and
team selection just right.
If you belong to Jesus Christ today you have the privilege of working
for the greatest boss in the history of the world! Notice what the
verses above. Jesus is ‘the Lord of the harvest’. He uses reaping a
harvest as a picture of his building his own church. He is in charge of
who he signs, not us. He knows best. He’s the greatest boss ever. Trust
him to get it right.
So what’s our job if we’re on his team, if we are one of his ‘workers’?
Our job is to be ‘sent out’ as a ‘worker’ into the harvest field. Notice
that the worker in the harvest field is not actually spurred on by
tender feelings towards the grain. He or she works out of obedience to
the Lord of the harvest.
We are servants sent out to the harvest field at his command. It’s his
harvest, not ours. And we may need to be reminded, therefore, of the
sovereignty of God in this matter. He knows best how to choose his team.
He knows who he’s going to sign. Our job is simply to get out there and
tell people about our boss and his offer. He will take charge of the
rest!
Will you do your job for your boss this week? Go for it, and trust him
with the results. Jesus is the boss of the world, so you can!
