Romans intro
Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle and set
apart for the gospel of God— the gospel he promised beforehand through
his prophets in the Holy Scriptures Romans 1:1-2
For the next few weeks we will focus on Romans 1-4 in our weekly email.
Romans is a letter that Paul wrote to the church in Rome, probably from
Corinth in about AD 57. In the first sentence Paul introduces “the
gospel”. Paul believed the gospel was for all the world; no one was
exempt. Ultimately God would hold everyone accountable. People would
face God’s wrath for their denial of the truth but God provides a way of
avoiding his anger.
At its simplest the letter fits together like this; Paul sets up the
problem (1v18-3v20), tells the solution (3v21-4v25), explains the
solution (5v1-8v32) and draws some implications and applications (9v1ff)
In Romans 1-4 the universal need for salvation is set forth powerfully.
The whole human race is found guilty and inexcusable and facing God’s
anger. The only hope lies in God’s solution to God’s problem – a right
standing with God available in Christ and accessed through faith.
We believe that God has called us to take the gospel into the world of
sport and we want you to share that task with us. If we believe with
Paul that the gospel is for everyone, then that must include the world
of sport. A clear understanding of the gospel will help and motivate us
to represent him in the world of sport – wherever you are. As this email
goes to people in over 100 countries, together we can make quite an
impact on the world of sport.
