WESTSIDE FC SCOOP FA REGIONAL AWARD

This summer saw the Football Association presented Wandsworth Christian based club, Westside FC with the award for being named as South-East Regional winners of the FA Charter Standard Award for Adult Clubs, putting it in the top nine clubs across the country in this category. Westside have achieved this within 10 years of formation despite having no ground of their own and still having to train in the local park.

The award was presented by Jason Kilby, the Surrey F.A. Community Development Manager who cited the diversity of the club’s membership as the key to its success.

He said “Westside were put forward for the regional award to be chosen from an area covering Oxfordshire, Surrey, Hampshire, Bucks, Sussex and Kent. There are several thousand charter standard clubs across the country so for a club that started from 5 or 6 guys in a church hall to achieve such an award is no mean feat. He added, “The club’s community development work is reflected in the diversity of ages and nationalities involved that reflect the make-up Wandsworth”

Westside’s Director of Football, Graham Holder is keen to build on the club’s latest success. He said “A home ground that would allow us to have a clubhouse is a one key factor and we would like to make a link to a local school with a view to perhaps qualifying for the Community Charter Standard award in the future.”

Westside has come a long way since it’s first season with one team in the Kingston and District League (KDL) Division 5 in 1995-6. The first team is now in the Surrey South-Eastern Combination with three other men’s teams in the KDL and a women’s team and U10, U12 and U13 Boys teams and a Girls U14. The club is always looking for new players for all its teams. Adults who are interested should ring 0208 8742829 and youth players 0208 8773945.
