2006 FIFA World Cup Germany™

So after all the waiting we now know the schedule of matches for the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany™. FIFA has 205 nation members of whom 32 will contest the FIFA World Cup Germany™. There will only be one winner.

England games
England as one of the eight seeds have the following three group fixtures in Group B

Paraguay (10 June in Frankfurt)
Trinidad (15 June in Nuremberg)
Sweden (20 June in Cologne)

Kick-off times to be confirmed.

The draw has been made right to the final (Winner of group B plays runner-up in group A etc)
The only way England could meet Brazil in the final is if one wins its group and the other finishes second in theirs. If both win their group (or both finish second), they are in the same half of the draw.

Weir’s predictions
Second Round England v Poland
Quarter Final England v Netherlands
Semi-final England v Brazil
Final England v Argentina or France

Group stage
England open against Paraguay. We have only met Paraguay once before in the FIFA World Cup™. That was in 1986 when Lineker 2 and Beardsley scored in a 3-0 win. We have never met Trinidad and Tobago who are in their first the FIFA World Cup™. We met Sweden in our opening game in 2002 when a 1-1 draw saw both teams qualify for the second phase.

Africa
As well the first ever appearance in the the FIFA World Cup™ of Australia and Trinidad and Tobago, the romance of the 2006 the FIFA World Cup™ is the four African countries, which have qualified for the first time. The draw has done them no favours. Cote d’Ivoire face Argentina, the Netherlands – fourth and third in the world rankings - and Serbia.
Togo must play France, Switzerland and Korea. Ghana are with Italy, USA and the Czech Republic. Angola face Portugal, Iran and Mexico.

On paper none of the four African newcomers has a chance to make it to the second phase. Just as first-time qualifiers Senegal had no chance against reigning champions France in 2002. In case you have forgotten Senegal beat France 1-0 in their first ever group match, drew with Denmark and Uruguay – throwing away a 3-0 lead to draw 3-3. They progressed to the second round where they beat Sweden and only went out in the quarter-final to an extra-time golden goal against Turkey.

Don’t be surprised if one of the newcomers overturns one of the more fancied teams.
