VISION

The vision of Christians in Sport is to reach the world of sport for Christ. That is not confined to the UK, and there are many faithful Christian in sport across the world already making a difference for Christ in their own countries. We are one of the most resource rich countries in the world when it comes to sports mission - it's time to share of what we have and to learn from other partners in the work.

AIMS OF TRIP

Our aims for these short-term mission trips is to serve and support our mission partners in their on-going sports ministry work in India, primarily through providing training and doing sports mission.

Training

  • Provide Sports Ministry training for University students, church, youth and charity workers involved in sports ministry

  • Provide Sports Value coaching sessions

Mission

  • Pioneer sports ministry in Universities in Chennai, through speaking at Christian Unions, providing an afternoon sports mission and seminars

  • Provide practical support and coaching at kid’s summer camps

  • Spend a week supporting a 'Game of 2 Halves' project doing practical hands-on relief work with underprivileged children, including an element of sport and mission

We also want to provide an opportunity for you to develop on a personal level, to experience a new culture and to grow as a disciple of Christ’s as you step out of your comfort zone.

Why should I go?

Our vision in the University Department at Christians in Sport is to reach the student world of sport for Christ, and that extends beyond the UK. As a student yourself you will have an opportunity to reach out to those in a very similar position to you in India. You will be challenged as you face new experiences, people and cultures. You will learn new things about yourself, other people and God, as you interact with local people and the team. Hopefully, you will make a lasting impact on the lives of individuals in India as they make a lasting impact on you.

Who can go?

You need to be a Christian student involved in the world of sport. You also need to be prepared to raise your own funds, be available for the whole trip, plus the training and debrief weekends (see below). You must also be willing to be challenged!

Where will I go?

The India trip will be based in Chennai and may involve some travelling by road to other local towns or villages.

What are the dates?

India July 26 - August 16 2008 (confirmed)

You will also need to be available for the training weekend: 20-22 June and the debrief weekend: 7-9 November

What will I be doing on this trip?

We have 2 main focuses for the trip – mission and training. With these two elements we will aim to provide a mix of activities including providing training for local sports ministry leaders, helping to lead at a kid’s sports camp, and pioneering sports mission work in the universities in Chennai. We will also be doing some sort of practical hands-on work, such as helping at an orphanage, with underprivileged youth which will also have a sports and outreach component. This is linked to our ‘Game of 2 Halves’ projects. There will be opportunities for you to simply experience life in a different culture and to gain many experiences along the way! Much of what the team learnt last year resulted from simply being part of the team, reading and praying together and sharing their lives with one another.

What is ‘Game of 2 Halves’?

Game of 2 Halves is a great way to change the lives of underprivileged young people’s - and change your own by getting involved! It aims to help alleviate poverty and to meet the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of young people. This is done through financial, practical and physical assistance, so throughout the year many people raise money by doing something they enjoy - playing sport! On this trip you can have the privilege of seeing how some of that money is spent and the difference it makes to the lives of individuals in Uganda and India.

Game of 2 Halves

What experience do I need to go?

You don’t need any specific experience to go on this trip but if helps if you have had experience working with young people, helping on sports camps, coaching sport, or working/being in a culture outside of the Western world.

Who will I go with?

The team will be made up of Christian in Sport students from across the UK, such as yourself. It will be led by Greg Morgan (University Team Leader) and his wife Alice, and Nao Cutting (Uni Team Manager). All the staff have experience of working in a mission context internationally.

How much will I have to raise? What’s included in that?

India will cost £1350. This includes your flight, travel in the host country, accommodation, food, a team weekend away, the training and debrief weekends. It does not include medical/vaccination costs, spending money, insurance, and travel costs in the UK (i.e. to/from the training and debrief days and to/from Heathrow). We will provide lots of ideas about fundraising and we could do a corporate fundraising event as a University department, with some of the proceeds going towards the cost of the International Mission.

What training will be provided?

We will all have a weekend of training and preparation before we leave, which will provide specific training for the tasks we will be doing and the cultures we will be entering. We will also provide medical advice and kit lists.

How do I apply?

Please download an application form HERE, send it to Kate in the office with your deposit. We will then contact your references and let you know asap if you have a place on the team.

FEEDBACK FROM 2007 MISSION TRIP...

"The trip was the best thing I have ever done, and it really changed my life in so many ways..."

"It is so encouraging to see the Christians in Sport vision being embraced at (Ugandan) Unis"

"It was such an amazing month! One of the best things was the variety of things we were able to get involved with"

"My highlight was seeing 5 of my group on camp become Christians"

"I wasn't sure what to expect but it definitely challenged and pushed me in my attitudes and spiritual life"

"Although hard and uncomfortable at times it was all beneficial to go through... loved it all, and wouldn't change anything!"

“…We weren’t necessarily expecting what we were confronted by…fumigation is not killing pests and weeds in the fields, rather killing bugs in people’s houses and latrines.  I’m not sure how we can communicate some of the thoughts and emotions that went through our heads – people living in mud huts, four to a bed, in pitch black, with bugs which feed off human flesh. The greatest privilege for me was the opportunity to pray in every home we went in to - for  God’s reign in that place, his protection and provision”.
