BIBLE BIT

1)

Let’s have a recap!

Week 1 - Created identity

We started with the fact that we are created by God with our gifts and abilities and we should want to celebrate this with how we play our sport – by giving the glory back to him!

Week 2 - Different identity

We then looked at how we are called to be different in how we live and play our sport, so that our team mates will see a difference in us because of what Christ has done.

Week 3 - Physical identity

Next we looked at our physical identity, discussing how the Bible tells us to fix our eyes on Christ and look for his approval and acceptance for our appearance, rather than the world around us.

Week 4 - Changing identity

Last week was our changing identity and we examined how God is changing us by his Holy Spirit to become more like Christ.  We looked at our role in this process, along with the help of the Holy Spirit, of putting to death those areas which keep us from following Christ.

Final week– Secure identity

How do we continue to ensure our identity is found secure in God and nothing else?

‘Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.’

Hebrews 10 v 23

Look at this verse – it highlights our role and God’s role in this process.

1)       Our role – hold firmly to the hope found in the wonderful saving work of Christ on the cross for us and not be moved or swayed from this by anything or anyone.

What is the advice here?  Hold firm!  You know the truth of this gospel and what Christ has done for you so don’t let anything pull you away from this hope.  Be determined to hold unswervingly to this so that you will make it to the finish line.

2)       God’s role – being God!  Perfectly faithful in keeping all the promises of his word.  We know that God will fulfill his role perfectly because he is God.  How class is this!

What about you?

Will you hold firm and find your identity secure in him alone?

As you play your sport this week and in the future, look to God for your identity and no-one else – only he will be faithful and do as he has promised.

Name: David Mathew

Nicknames: Dave, Danger Mouse, Chip Buttie, Urchin

Sports: Cricket, rugby and tennis for my school 1st team (Hymers College)Besides golf off a 14 handicap, I play football, badminton and many others for fun!!!

Story: Playing in such competitive situations, particularly rugby, I find it very difficult to put God before my performance. However, I try to pray before each match and during if I remember. I try to set an example to my team mates, e.g. a recent match boiled over into a huge 15 on 15 fight (admittedly including me to start with!!) After a few moments of adrenaline rush, I realised what I was doing and tried to act as mediator for the rest of the 10 minute incident! I was very grateful that my faith took over from my heart and actually helped to calm down the situation!

PRAYER POINTS

  • Pray that God will help you as you hold firm to the truth of the gospel.

  • Pray for your friends in sport who don't know Jesus.

  • Pray for David - that he would represent Jesus well.
