BIBLE BIT

1)  Hi Friends,

Today is ‘Good Friday’. For the first 20 years of my life I never really grasped it!
I couldn’t understand why Christians around the world insisted on calling this particular day ‘good’. For it is the day that Christians celebrate the death of Jesus!
Let me ask you a question – When was the last time you celebrated someone’s death? A stupid question that we cant really answer except perhaps in extreme circumstances when we talk about an evil dictator of a country finally coming to the end of his rule, but this is far different!
Jesus was the ‘God man’. In his very being he was good. He cared for the poor, he healed the sick, he preached about a message of good news to all people. So why would anyone talk about His death as a good thing?? Why?

There’s one verse in the bible that can answer that question…

2 Corinthians 5v21
‘God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God’

Why is ‘Good Friday’ a good thing?
Because it’s good news for us. Something happened to Jesus instead of happening to me. A great substitution took place.
The one, who had no sin, became like me – a sinful man, to take my place and suffer the punishment I deserve. And what a punishment it was – the most horrendous death a man could die! I should stand in front of God and be punished for constantly turning my back on him, yet if I believe in Jesus, he becomes my sin and takes my punishment!

So what becomes of me?
I become the ‘righteousness of God’ – simply means I stand before God as a man who appears to have no sin, because Jesus has taken it and that’s why ‘Good Friday’ is called ‘good’ I get to have free passage back to God – forever!

It’s the greatest day in the World!
Are you a Christian this morning? - Celebrate Good Friday with every ounce of energy you have, whether playing sport or not!
Are you unsure about what Jesus has done? – What about taking a bit of time out this morning to investigate it further. Check out the ‘Why Jesus’ web pages

Happy Easter!

the rules and trying to avoid fights on the pitch that may erupt or even pulling players from my team out of the fights to stop them getting too violent. Also, I represent Christ by being willing to do whatever my coach/captain wants me to do instead of arguing that I am in the wrong position or play better somewhere else. I find this helps me represent Christ because Jesus did not say no or was reluctant to do God's will when he was dying on the cross, he did it with no complaints. Although I'm not the perfect person and do get a bit hot under the collar sometimes, it helps to know that Jesus died for me with no fuss and did not get angry when taunted so I think that we should all live like that to represent Christ in our sports.

PRAYER POINTS

  • Pray for Aaron as he represents Jesus in his sport. Pray that he would have opportunities to tell his team mates why he is trying to play differently.

  • Praise God for Good Friday and what Jesus did for us through his death on a cross.

  • As you spend time with friends and family over Easter pray for opportunities to tell them the good news.
