NEWS AND VIEWS

Scotland Tour

Lancs and Kirsten went on a mini tour of Scotland in the past week.  The Isle of Lewis PPS and the Aberdeen PPS groups were visited.  Both groups were holding a outreach events for their friends. Isle of Lewis held an Ultimate Frisbee Tournament and Aberdeen a Night of Champions (in the afternoon).  Many PPS-ers brought their friends along to hear a message from Romans 1 v16-17 ‘Uncovering the Truth’  It was a great time!

Northern Ireland Conference

Not long now!  14-16 December is the conference for young people and university students in Belfast.  There are at the moment 10 young people signed up and we’re waiting for more to confirm.  Live in Northern Ireland?  Free at any stage of the weekend? – get along to the conference. (more details)

PPS Groups

14 happened last month and were attended by 175 PPS-ers.  That’s a good amount of young people, yet we reckon so many more can be supported. Check out one near you and get some of your Christian sporty friends along – it's such a great time.  A girl who goes to the Belfast group spoke to Rachel Young – "I love it! Getting together with others who love Jesus and their sport is class. So get along!! (Find a group near you)

PLAYER PROFILE

Name: Kirsten Ross

Nickname: Kirst, Rossboss

Sport: Volleyball, running

Team: Campus Sports

Story: After a year out of volleyball to focus on the mighty marathon, I have just joined a new team.  Having always played ladies volleyball I am enjoying the banter within a mixed team and getting to know the guys.  The only other girl in the team is a friend called Nikki who I have played with over the last 9 years and have been praying for during that time.  Conversations about Jesus are few and far between unfortunately and so I am particularly praying that God would open a door for my message and that I may be ready and able to speak of him when opportunities do arise.

BIBLE BIT

Romans Series – Part 1

This series was preached at the first Sports Plus Conference in October this year.

Talk 2 – The truth rejected

Key Verse – Ch 1v25 – They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshipped and served created things rather than the Creator – who is forever to be praised. Amen

Last week we looked at a couple of verses in Chapter 1 of Romans.  They explained that the truth of God has been revealed to men through the gospel message.

Today we want to try and understand why this is such an important thing.  Why did Jesus have to die?  Why is this such good news for us today?

It’s a bad news good news scenario!  Do you know one of those people who always give you a good news/bad news scenario?  My sister used to do it me and it drove me crazy –

Lancs do you want the good news or the bad news first?”

Yo Sis, Give me the good news”

“The good news is, I’ve made you a cup of tea”

“Nice one dude – pass it here, hope it's got 2 sugars”

“The bad news is, I’ve already drunk it”

Then she would run off giggling, absolutely thrilled with herself!

You see, this is serious stuff!  It’s not a case of the bad news being slightly bad or not the best.  It’s not a case of the good news being alright news.  This is a case of massive proportions.  The bad news is horrendous news – you cannot imagine how terrible it really it.  If the bad news is properly understood then the good news is quite unbelievable, earth shattering, monumental news!

So what is the bad news?

The bad news is that the wrath of God is being revealed and this is a terrible thing – Romans 1v18.  The wrath of God is being revealed against the wickedness of men.  This is because of v21/22 – everybody has not glorified God or gave thanks to him as they were created to because they have exchanged the truth of God for images.

That simply means that humankind has exchanged glorifying God for glorifying themselves and things they pursue as gods!

What are you exchanging for God at the moment?  What images are you chasing after instead of giving your all to God.  It could be sport, fashion, the way you look, the way you want others to look at you.  We all exchange seeking after God for seeking after the things of the world at some time of our lives.  What are you exchanging God for at the moment?

It is because of the this the wrath of God is being revealed.  The truth has been rejected even though the truth has been revealed?

What can be done about the situation we find ourselves in?

It’s the truth redefined next week!
