Created Identity
How good is it when you nail
the ball down the line for the winning point
or hammer the ball into the back of the
net? What a feeling, eh? Is there anything
like it?!
We are sportspeople.
We all get the buzz of stepping onto the
pitch, competing with every ounce of energy
and battling against tough opponents. As
sportspeople we get a real sense of worth
from performing to our best.
As a young person trying to
Pray Play Say in your sport, where does your
true identity lie?
Read these words of David
from Psalm 139;
‘For you created my inmost
being; you knit me together in my mother’s
womb.
I praise you because I am
fearfully and wonderfully made.’
What is David praising God
for here? His created identity.
Look what he is saying in these verses;
1) ‘For you created’ –
here created also means to have
something as a possession. God created us
from nothing and designed us exactly as he
wanted us to be. We are his creative
possessions!
2) ‘my inmost being’ –
God has created our bodies as well
as everything within us, right down to the
deepest depths of our being – every inch of
us has been created by him.
3) ‘you knit me
together in my mother’s womb’ –
Again, David is saying
that God put us together before we were born
– he pieced us together in our mother’s
womb. His design for us was drawn up before
we even existed!
4) ‘I praise you
because I am fearfully and wonderfully made’
– David is praising God for creating us as
complex creatures that have been wonderfully
made. For us that includes our sporting
gifts and abilities.
How will you play this week
in your sport?
Will you use every part of
your being to represent God with how you
play?
Let’s allow our created
identity to drive us this week as we
play our sport and seek to please the
Creator by whom we have been ‘fearfully and
wonderfully made’.
