1)
Christ is our perfect example
of humility. If we want to follow Christ,
then surely we want to live as he lived and
have an attitude like his.
A right view of Jesus
“Your attitude should be the
same as that of Christ Jesus, who being in
very nature God, did not consider equality
with God something to be grasped, but made
himself nothing, taking the very nature of a
servant, being made in human likeness.
Philippians 2 v 5-7
We see humility in every
aspect of Jesus’ life – He was truly God,
yet he willingly laid aside his status, and
reputation, of being equal with God, and
took on the form of a man. He was born in a
stable in the small town of Bethlehem, grew
up in a carpenter’s home, didn’t own
anything, was friends with sinners and even
had to ride a borrowed donkey into
Jerusalem!!
Why did Jesus willingly live
this life?
Jesus was willing to give up
his rights in order to obey God and
serve people. He lived a life of
utter obedience to God, his Father, and took
on ‘the very nature of a servant’.
One of the greatest examples
of Jesus’ humility and willingness to serve
others was when he washed his disciples’
feet (not a pleasant job!!) Washing guests’
feet was a job for the servant of the house,
yet Jesus bent low and demonstrated his
servant attitude to his disciples.
What does Jesus want us to
learn from his life?
One of the greatest virtues
that Jesus wants us to imitate is his
humility: “Learn from me”, says Jesus in
Matthew 11v29. What is so important for us
to learn? To perform miracles, to calm a
storm, to cast out demons?! No, no, no..…,
“learn from me
for I am gentle and
humble of heart”. Matthew 11v29
Jesus is saying his humility
is one of the most important characteristics
he wants us to imitate. It is at the centre
of his very heart and being.
So as we come to the end of
this series,
·
Is not Jesus’ example a good
enough reason to be humble?
·
Are we willing to follow
Jesus’ example of serving?
·
How can you serve your
team-mates today?
The challenge is there
friends – Be humble like Jesus!!
