BIBLE BIT
Series:
A Marathon not a Sprint
In this 8 week series we
are considering what will help us to persevere in the
race of life and to last the course:
Week 1 – ‘A Stable Core’ – Jesus, the firm foundation!
Week 2 – ‘Tripping Up’ – No holding back!
Week 3 – ‘Tunnel Vision’ – Eyes fixed on Jesus!
This week – ‘No Quick Fix’
As a physio, people used to come with a problem and
expect me to do something miraculous that made them
instantly better and able to play their sport. So often
I had to explain that there are no quick fixes. They
must do something to help themselves, whether that be
following an exercise programme, correcting their
posture, or changing their lifestyle.
Or then there is my friend who is always trying to lose
weight. She tries one faddy diet after another, spends a
fortune on all sorts of herbal remedies which apparently
assist weight loss, and even goes to the toning tables
in the hope she will develop a six pack overnight!!
There are no quick fixes, whether to an injury, or to a
diet problem, or to the Christian life. So often we want
to know Jesus better but we just don’t want to put in
the effort that is required to build a relationship with
Him.
We learned last week that fixing our eyes on Jesus will
help us endure the storms and struggles that come our
way. Over the next 3 weeks we are going to consider
three things that will help us to do this:
1. Prayer
2. Bible study
3. Church
Just like months of training, eating the right food, and
getting plenty of sleep helped ensure I completed the
marathon, we must make these three things a priority in
our Christian lives in order to help us last the course.
These things will require effort but ultimately will
help us persevere. Paul knew this and, with reference to
the race of life in 1 Corinthians 9v25, encourages us to
go into ‘strict training’.
As we look at each of these things over the next three
weeks we will consider why they are important. These are
the three things which Jesus practiced and encouraged us
to do in order to build a relationship with His Father
God. Obviously these are three massive subjects and we
are not going to look at them all in great detail but
will specifically consider how these three things help
us to persevere in the race of life.
