‘Ex Christians in sport academy member trying
to represent Jesus at University’
Frank Mayfield turned up at Leeds Metropolitan Uni last week as
a new fresher, a tough time for every Christian young person to
stand up and make a difference. As part of his email he writes:
On the first day I prayed that God
would give me opportunities to nail my colours to the cross
early. Sure enough in our first tutor group session we made a
large circle and went round the group saying what was important
in our lives and a little background info! i was about half way
round and i got that horrible feeling in my stomach, I said i
had done an academy with Christians in sport and that CIS was
for people who love God and are passionate about their sport.
Awkward silence, people shuffling a bit, but i was so thrilled,
to get that on the table on the first day. One of the lads
sitting next to me got chatting afterwards and he came along to
a Christian union social two nights ago. What a God we have!

Bible Bit
Know the Truth – Going
through the basics Christians believe so that we are better
equipped to tell our friends about Jesus
So far………
1 – God is God
2 – God is the creator of all things
3 – Man was originally created to be in perfect relationship
with God
4 – Man has rejected God and His rule
5 – Man’s punishment is death and judgment.
This week…
6 – God has got a rescue plan for people
I wonder if you have ever been in a situation where you have
needed someone’s help. I mean, really needed someone else’s
help to the point where you wouldn’t have been able to go on
unless that individual helped you out!!
I can remember a time when I was really young, perhaps 6
years old. Me and my mate were playing a stupid game looking
back but fun at the time – seeing how many small gobstopper
sweets we could stick up our nose! It was marvellous scenes
as I managed to cram 4 sweets up each nostril and won the
game. Of course you’ve guessed it – as I tried to get the
sweets out of my nose all I was doing was pushing them
further up. I realised I was in trouble and so after a sharp
word from my mother she tried to free me of the dreaded
gobstoppers!! They would not shift and so off we went to
accident and emergency to get them taken out by a doctor!!
You see, I couldn’t help myself no matter how hard I tried,
I needed the help of someone and that someone had to be a
person who could really help.
Last week we came to the point of realising that every
person is in a position of helplessness. Not one person can
help themselves. We have turned our back on God and so do
not have the ability to do good or to turn into better
people. At this point God steps in and says ‘I love Lanky so
much that I’m going to help Him and it's only me that can’
Romans 5v8 explains this brilliantly – “But God demonstrates
His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners,
Christ died for us”
We’ll unpack that a little further on next week but for now
– be thrilled that if you believe in Jesus God did help us
and only he could!! |
